Belgium was the first country from the European mainland to play association football. The Belgium National Team, also known as the Red Devils, faced many challenges.
The Red Devils faced disappointing results in the past. However, they have a “golden generation” from 2010 till 2021 with a lot of quality players. This even resulted in the first number one place in the FIFA World Rankings in 2015. In 2022, Belgium will be the only national team in the World to be in this place without winning a major continental trophy.
Most of the home matches are played in the King Baudouin Stadium. This is the largest stadium in Belgium, with 50,093 seats.

After one of these matches, a Dutch reporter noted that Belgium players worked as devils. This led to the team becoming known as the Red Devils.
The matchup versus France is nicknamed le Match Sympathique (the Friendly Match)
Belgium’s top defender Jan Vertonghen, who played the most matches for Ajax and Tottenham Hotspur, is the player with the most caps for the Belgium National Team: 134. He started his national career in 2007 and is still available for the team in 2022. It’s interesting to note that the players in the top three are all still active.
