Foundation

It was founded in 1990 and currently consists of 12 teams. The league operates on a system of promotion and relegation, with the top team crowned the champion at the end of the season. Until 1990 it was called Mestaruussarja.

Veikkausliiga Format

The Veikkausliiga operates on a double round-robin system, meaning that each team plays every other team twice during the season for 22 matches. Teams are awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned the champion.

The top 6 teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the playoffs, which are played in a knockout format. The two semi-final winners play in the final, with the winner being crowned the Veikkausliiga champion.

The bottom team at the end of the season are relegated to the Ykkönen, the second-highest league in Finland, and is replaced by the top team from the Ykkönen. And the second last team plays a two-leg play-off versus the Ykkönen runner-up.
