3. Liga history

On the 8th of September 2006, the introduction of the 3. Liga was announced. The league aimed to create a great performance density with better support and development opportunities for talented players. Half of the clubs from the Regionalliga North and South were able to qualify for the first season. In addition to that, four relegated teams from the 2. Bundesliga would play in the 3. Liga. The first match of the 3. Liga was played on the 25th of July 2008 between Rot-Weiß Erfurt and Dynamo Dresden. The first champion of the 3. Liga was 1. FC Union Berlin. The 3. Liga contains 20 clubs. The first two teams are promoted directly, the third in the table must play for promotion against the third from the bottom of the 2. Bundesliga. The bottom four teams are relegated directly to one of the five Regionalligen. Until 2018, three were relegated.

  • Since the establishment of the 3. Liga in 2008 a total of 63 clubs have played in this division.
  • The highest win was recorded on the 11th of August 2010 when FC Saarbrücken won 7-0 against FC Carl Zeiss Jena.
  • The record for most goals in a game stands at 10. They were scored in a crazy match between Eintracht Braunschweig and Fortuna Düsseldorf who ended the match 5-5.
  • The most league appearances were made by Robert Müller who played 348 games in the 3. Liga.
  • Robert Müller is also the player who has played for the highest number of clubs with 8 different clubs in 11 seasons.
  • Anton Fink has scored the most goals in the history of the league with 136.
  • The record for most own goals per match was set recently by Tobias Fölster when he scored two own goals on the 2nd of April 2022.

 

  • The youngest player to participate in a match is Abdoulaye Kamare who made his appearance at just 16 years, 9 months and 7 days old.
  • The oldest player to participate in a match is Branko Okic who played at an age of 40 years, 3 months and 7 days.
  • The club with the most points in the 3. Liga is SV Wehen Wiesbaden with 651 points. They also hold the record for most matches played with 448.
  • The highest transfer amount paid was for Yussuf Poulsen. RB Leipzig paid €1.55m for his services.
  • The highest transfer amount received was for Georg Niedermeier who joined VFB Stuttgart for €3.50m.
  • The record for the game with the most spectators was set by Fortuna Düsseldorf in 2009 when 50.095 spectators attended the game against Werder Bremen II.
