Structure

The league currently comprises 11 clubs. Each season of the tournament generally runs from November to March. During the league stage of the competition, each club plays against all the other clubs in a round-robin style. At the end of the league stage, the team with the most points gets declared the Premiers. They are presented with a trophy named League Winners Shield. The top four clubs qualify for the play-offs. The season then culminates with the ISL Final to determine the Champions. They are presented with the ISL Trophy. The league stage winners participate directly in the AFC Champions League and the ISL Final winner participates in the AFC Cup qualifying playoffs.

History

The competition was founded on 21 October 2013. To grow the sport of football in India and increasing its exposure in the country. The league began in October 2014 with eight teams. During its first three seasons, the competition operated without official recognition from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the governing body for the sport in Asia. The competition was also structured along the same lines as the Indian Premier League, the country’s premier Twenty20 franchise-based cricket competition. Each season lasted just 3 months, from October to December, and matches were held daily. However, before the 2017–18 season, the league expanded to ten teams, expanded its schedule to six months, and earned recognition from the AFC.

Team

FC Goa is the club with the most matches played in the Indian Super League. They have played a total of 150 matches, winning 62 and drawing 42. Which puts them on top of the all-time standings with 228 points. Chennaiyin FC and Atlético de Kolkata have won the league stage the most times with 2. The rest have all just won it once. The current champions are Hyderabad who won their first title in the 2021-22 season. The biggest victory was recorded by FC Goa who beat Mumbai City FC 7-0 back in 2015. The match with the most goals was between Odisha FC and SC East Bengal who finished the match 6-5 in 2021. The club with the most current value is Mumbai City FC who are valued at €5.18m.

 

 

Players

The player with the most appearances is Mandar Rao Desai. At the time of writing, he has 128 appearances but he is currently still adding to that total. Close behind him are Narayan Das (126) and Lenny Rodrigues (125). They are also still active. The all-time top scorer is Bartholomew Ogbeche who has, at the time of writing, scored 51 goals in 70 games. This means he averages a goal every 100 minutes he plays. The youngest goalscorer is Lalrinliana Hnamte who scored at just 18 years, 9 months and 4 days old. The oldest goalscorer is Igor Angulo who scored at 38 years and 18 days old. The record for most goals in a single match is held by Modou Sougou who scored 4 goals in a match for Mumbai City FC.
