Conference league history

This European club tournament is the third most important annual international football tournament for clubs. The 2021/2022 season was a historic season. Because in 2021/2022 it started for the first time in history. The idea to start this tournament began in 2015, and in 2018 it was officially announced that the league would be implemented. And here we are looking at the Sportmonks Conference League page.


The first round of 16 ever

There is no historical data because 2021/2022 is the cup’s first active season. What is interesting to see are the teams and matchups in the round of 16.

First teams in the knockout stage

AZ is the first club from the Netherlands to participate in the round of 16. They are from Alkmaar and play in the AFAS Stadion, which has a capacity of 19,500. In 1980/1981, they were the runner-up in the UEFA Cup. UEFA Ranking: 59

FC Basel is a club from Switzerland and plays the home games in St. Jakob-Park, which has a capacity of 38,512. Basel reached the semifinals of the Europa League in 2012/2013. UEFA Ranking: 28

Feyenoord is the third Dutch team in the tournament to participate. They play their home games in ‘de Kuip.’ De Kuip has a capacity of 51,117. Feyenoord’s best results was winning the UEFA Cup in 1973/1974 and 2001/2002. UEFA Ranking: 57

KAA Gent is a Belgian club in the city Gent. Their home ground is Ghelamco Arena which has a capacity of 20,000. Finally, their best European result was the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1991/1992. UEFA Ranking: 60

LASK is a from Linz in Austria. The home games are played in the Raiffeisen Arena, which has a capacity of 7,870. LASK managed to reach the round of 16 in the Europa League during the 2019/2020 season. UEFA Ranking: 50

Leicester City is the only club from England participating in the Conference League. The home ground has a capacity of 32,312 and is called the King Power Stadium. The best European result of the club is the round of 32 in the Europa League in 2020/2021. UEFA Ranking: 77

Olympique Marseille is one of the two clubs from France participating in the Confederations Cup. The club’s home ground is the Stade Vélodrome, with a capacity of 67,000. Marseille was the Europa League/UEFA Cup runner-up in the following seasons: 1998/1999, 2003/2004 and 2017/2018. UEFA Ranking: 45

Slavia Praha is from the Czech Republic and plays in the Eden Aréna, which has a capacity of 20,800. The best result in the UEFA Cup is reaching the semis in 1995/1996. UEFA Ranking: 32

Vitesse is the fourth club from the Netherlands participating in the Conference League. The club plays in the Gelredome in Arnhem. The Gelredome has a capacity of 34,000 and was one of the eight stations from the European Championship in 2000. The club’s best result in the European competitions was when they became the runner-up in 1990/1991 in the Europa League. Back then, it was called the UEFA Cup. UEFA Ranking: 103

First Conference League Winners

AS Roma is from the city of Rome. The Italian side plays in Stadio Olimpico, with a capacity of 72,698. The best result in Europe for Roma is being the runner-up in the UEFA Cup in 1990/1991. UEFA Ranking: 12.

AS Roma got a realitively easy group and topped it comfortably with 13 points. After that Vitesse challenged them in the round of 16 but Roma beat them 1-2 over two legs. After that they played a familiar opponnent, Bodø/Glimt, who they were draw in the group with. They lost the first leg 2-1 but comfortably beat them in the second one with 4-0. So, Roma was through to the semi-final were they faced their first real test, Leicester City. A stalemate 1-1 draw in the King Power Stadium meant it was all to play for in the second leg. Tammy Abraham scored the only goal in that match in the 11th minute taking AS Roma to the Conference League final.

The final was played on 25 May 2022 at the Arena Kombëtare in Tirana. A draw was held on 18 March 2022, after the quarter-final and semi-final draws, to determine the “home” team for administrative purposes. AS Roma won the final against Feyenoord after a the only goal was scored in the 32nd minute by Nicolo Zaniolo.

The system used is the same as the Champions League. There are a couple of play-off rounds at the start of every season. The main tournament starts after the preliminaries with the group stage, in which four teams per group battle each other twice to get to the knockout phase. There are eight different groups with four teams each.

The winner of the final will receive a ticket for the Europa League next season.
