J. League format

Eighteen clubs will play in a double round-robin (home and away) format, a total of 34 games each. A club receives 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss. The clubs are ranked by points, and tiebreakers are, in the following order. A draw would be conducted, if necessary. However, if two clubs are tied for first place, both clubs will be declared co-champions. The top three clubs will qualify for the following year’s AFC Champions League, while the bottom two clubs will be relegated to J2. The third club will play a playoff against the J2 playoffs-winning team.

  • The most successful club in J. League history are the Kashima Antlers, they have won the championship a total of 8 times. That’s double the amount of the team after them, who have won it 4 times.
  • The record for the highest average of visitors is held by Urawa Red Diamonds. They had an average of 47.609 spectators in the 07-08 season. They have had the highest average for 13 of the last 15 seasons.
  • The biggest victory in J. League history was recently in 2021. Yokohama F. Marinos beat FC Tokyo 8-0.
  • The game with the most goals was held in 1998 when Cerezo Osaka lost to Kashawi Reysol in a crazy 5-7 match.
  • The best start to a season was made by Kawasaki Frontale when they went the first 10 matches which 9 wins and one draw. A remarkable feat that helped them secure the title in a dominant season.

  • The oldest player to score is Zico who scored at the ripe age of 41 years 3 months and 12 days.
  • The youngest player to score is Takayuki Morimoto who was 15 years 11 months and 28 days when he scored.
  • The best foreign player in the J. League is Marquinhos. He scored 119 goals and 20 assists in 251 matches for five different clubs.
  • The weirdest debut belongs to Carlos Mozer. He played two minutes before being sent off for a foul.
  • The record for most goals per player in a single match is held by 3 different players. Masashi Nakayama, Edílson and Wagner Lopes. They all scored 5 goals in a single match.
