Overview of Primera División

The Primera División, also known as the Campeonato Nacional or Liga de Primera Itaú, is the top professional football league in Chile. It was established in 1933 and is currently organised by the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANFP).

ANFP and governance
The ANFP is the official governing body of professional football in Chile, responsible for organising, enforcing rules, and regulating the Primera División and other national competitions.

League format and structure
The current format is a single, calendar-year tournament with 16 teams, using a double round-robin system. The bottom teams are relegated to the second tier, Primera B, and are replaced by the top teams from that division.

Clubs and historical performance
– Founding and early winners: Deportes Magallanes were the first champions in 1933.
– Most successful clubs: Colo-Colo holds the most titles with a record 34, followed by Universidad de Chile (18 titles) and Universidad Católica (16 titles).
– Cobreloa is the most successful club outside of the capital, with 8 titles.

International qualification
The league champion and runners-up typically qualify for the Copa Libertadores, while other high-ranking teams may qualify for the Copa Sudamericana.

Structure of Chilean football system
The Chilean football pyramid has three professional levels: Primera División, Primera B, and Segunda División Profesional, followed by amateur leagues.

Historical context and legacy
The league was founded by clubs that broke away from the amateur Asociación de Fútbol de Santiago. It has been regarded as one of the strongest leagues in South America and was ranked 37th in the world in 2024 by the IFFHS.

Notable clubs & rivalries

Major clubs in the Primera División

Colo-Colo: Chile’s most successful club, holding the record for the most league titles with 34 and is the only team to have competed in every season. They enter the 2025 season as the defending champions.
Universidad de Chile: Based in Santiago, they are known as “La U” or “Los Azules.” The club has won 18 Primera División titles and made a significant mark internationally by winning the 2011 Copa Sudamericana without losing a match.
Universidad Católica: Another powerhouse from Santiago, they regularly challenge for top honours alongside Colo-Colo and Universidad de Chile, and are a key part of Chilean football’s elite. They have won 16 titles.
Cobreloa: Based in Calama, they quickly rose to success after being founded in 1977. The club has won eight league titles and reached the Copa Libertadores final twice, making them the most successful team outside of Santiago.
Unión Española: Founded by Spanish immigrants, this is one of Chile’s older and more historically distinguished clubs. They have won the league seven times and have fierce local rivalries.
Everton de Viña del Mar: With four league titles and a rich history, Everton is the second-most successful club outside of Santiago. Their classic rivalry is with nearby Santiago Wanderers, a match known as the “Clásico Porteño.”

Iconic rivalries & derbies

Superclásico: A fiery derby between Colo-Colo and Universidad de Chile. It is arguably the most intense match in Chilean football and has been played since 1938.
Santiago derbies: Whenever Universidad de Chile, Universidad Católica, and Colo-Colo face off, it creates a significant local and cultural rivalry.
Clásico de Colonias: This is an interesting rivalry between Unión Española (founded by Spanish immigrants), Palestino (representing the Palestinian diaspora), and Audax Italiano (with Italian heritage). The rivalry is rooted in their immigrant origins and shared histories.
Clásico Porteño: A deep-rooted battle between Everton de Viña del Mar and Santiago Wanderers. It’s a seaside derby that reflects regional pride.
Clásico Albo-Loíno: A regional derby between Cobreloa and Colo-Colo, which represents the competitive clash between the mining town of Calama and the capital’s powerhouse.

Season format & regulations

The 2025 season of the Chilean Primera División, officially called the Liga de Primera Itaú 2025, is running from 14 February to 7 December 2025. It’s a single, year-long tournament with 16 teams playing each other twice. That’s a total of 30 matches for each team.

Points system & ranking criteria

The league uses the standard football points system:
– 3 points for a win.
– 1 point for a draw.
– 0 points for a loss.

If teams end up with the same number of points, a long list of rules is used to separate them. They start with goal difference, then the number of matches won, then goals scored, and so on, all the way down to a drawing of lots if necessary. If the title comes down to two teams on equal points, a special play-off match is held on neutral ground to decide the winner.

Promotion & relegation

At the end of the season, the two teams with the fewest points are automatically relegated to Primera B. In return, the top two teams from Primera B are promoted to the top flight. This includes the team that finishes first, and the winner of a play-off final.

International qualification slots

From the 2025 season, clubs will qualify for continental competitions as follows:
Copa Libertadores 2026: The champion, runner-up, and the winner of the Copa Chile 2025 all get a place.
Copa Sudamericana 2026: The teams that finish in 4th to 7th place in the league table qualify for this tournament.

Youth player requirement

The league has a “youth players rule” that was put in place for the 2015-16 season. It requires clubs to have at least two Chilean-born players who were born after 1 July 1995, and to make sure they play for at least 675 minutes during the season. This rule applies to the Primera División, Primera B, Segunda División Profesional, and Copa Chile but not to international tournaments. If a club fails to follow this rule, they get a 3-point deduction and a fine.
