Structure & competition format

The Belarusian Premier League, locally known as Vyšejšaja Liha, was founded in 1992 after the end of the Soviet Union. It is the top professional football league in the country and is run by the Belarusian Football Federation.

League composition & scheduling

As of 2025, the league is made up of 16 teams. Each team plays every other team twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 30 matches per season. The league runs on a calendar year schedule, usually starting in March and ending in November or December. This helps to avoid bad winter weather.

Historically, the number of clubs has changed over the years, from as many as 17 in the 1992–93 season to as few as 11 in 2012. It has been stable at 16 teams in recent seasons.

Promotion & relegation system

At the end of the season, the two teams at the bottom of the league are automatically relegated to the Belarusian First League. The team that finishes third from bottom has to play in a playoff against the third-placed team from the First League for the last spot in the top flight. The top two teams from the First League are automatically promoted.

In the 2024 season, Dinamo Minsk won the title for the ninth time, while Dnepr Mogilev and Shakhtyor Soligorsk were relegated. Naftan Novopolotsk, who finished 14th, won their playoff to stay in the top division.

Clubs & historical records

Prominent clubs in the Belarus Vyšejšaja Liha

FC BATE Borisov: Founded in 1973 (and reborn in 1996), BATE Borisov is the most successful club in the league’s history with 15 titles. This includes an impressive 13 in a row between 2006 and 2018. They are also the only Belarusian club to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage, which they have done five times. BATE play their home games at the modern Borisov Arena.
FC Dinamo Minsk: Established in 1927, Dinamo Minsk is the oldest major Belarusian club and the only one to have competed in the Soviet Top League. Since Belarus gained independence, they have won 9 Premier League titles and 3 Belarusian Cups. Dinamo Minsk play at the Dinamo Stadium and are the second Belarusian club to reach the Europa League group stage.
FC Dynamo Brest: Founded in 1960, Dynamo Brest won its first Premier League title in 2019. The club has also won the Belarusian Cup multiple times.
FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk: Established in 1961, Shakhtyor Soligorsk has been a consistent presence in the Vyšejšaja Liha since 1992. They won championships in 2005, 2020, and 2021. However, in 2023, they were stripped of their 2022 title and given a large point deduction due to a match-fixing scandal. Following a disastrous 2024 season, they were relegated for the first time. In 2025, the club failed to get a licence and was disbanded due to financial debts.
FC Gomel: Founded in 1959, the club was renamed FC Gomel in 1995. They were Premier League champions in 2003, runners-up in 2007, and have also won the Belarusian Cup multiple times.
