On the left, you can see an example response of the 2022/2023 UEFA Conference League table.
In the first season, we already saw many surprises, with Tottenham Hotspur and Union Berlin failing to progress. The 2022-23 season is no different, with FC Köln and Slavia Praha failing to qualify for the next round.
Thanks to the Football API’s flexibility, you can display the UEFA Conference League Table. Let’s look at some of the big surprises in the first season (2021/22) of this new European competition.
The favourites of Group A did not disappoint. Austrian side LASK Linz and Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv progressed to the next stage quite quickly: beating HJK Split and Alashkert, who both conceded 15 goals. Ending the goal difference in the UEFA Conference League Table on -10 and -11, the top two teams had the opposite: +10 and +11.
Belgian side AA Gent finished on first place in their group. Some of their opponents, Anorthosis and Flora, were relatively new to European competitions. The Conference League is an excellent podium for teams to taste European football. Gent and Partizan advanced to the next stage.
The winner of the first UEFA Conference League edition, AS Roma, finished first in their group. This was not easy; they lost against Bodo/Glimt (6-1). Undoubtedly one of the biggest surprises in the competition. The other team that progressed was Bodo/Glimt. Later in the competition, the two clubs faced each other again.
AZ Alkmaar was one of the three Eredivisie clubs that started in the group stage of the Conference League. Eventually, four Eredivisie teams played in the Conference League, as PSV Eindhoven joined in the next round after failing to progress in the UEFA Europa League. In Group D, AZ Alkmaar and Randers FC progressed to the next stage.
Feyenoord Rotterdam had one of the most challenging groups on paper. Eventually, they progressed relatively easily with no losses in the group stage. They even managed to make it to the final, which they lost against AS Roma. Slavia Praha and Union Berlin battled each other till the last day to determine the second place in the UEFA Conference League Table. Eventually, Slavia Praha managed to secure the second place and thus, to proceed to the next round.
Danish side København and Greek side PAOK had an easy group campaign. They were drawn against the team which conceded the most goals, 17 in total, in the group stage: Lincoln FC. FC Copenhagen and PAOK managed to secure the first and second place in Group F
Quite the upset in group G: Ligue 1 club Rennes and Eredivisie club Vitesse progressed instead of one of the title contenders Tottenham Hotspur. Due to a COVID-19 outbreak, the Spurs could not field a team against Rennes. After consideration, the UEFA officially confirmed that Tottenham had been eliminated from the Europa Conference League as their postponed fixture against Rennes would be deemed a forfeit.
FC Basel and Qarabag progressed quite quickly to the next round without any surprises. FC Basel managed to secure the first place with 14 points. Qarabağ secured second place in Group H with 11 points.
