History & evolution

Origins & pre-professional era

The Albanian Football Association (FSHF) was founded in the late 1920s. Soon after, the national championship, then called Kampionati Kombëtar Shqiptar (Albanian National Championship), was launched in 1930. The first competition had only a small number of clubs, and in the earliest years, teams from major cities like Tirana and Shkodër dominated.

Wartime interruption & unofficial championships

During World War II, the league was interrupted. However, three wartime championships were held from 1939-1942. The Albanian Football Federation does not officially recognise these tournaments as part of the formal championship history. Some seasons were also not held or were interrupted, including 1935, 1938-1944, 1949, and 1962.

Name changes & structural adjustments

From 1930 until 2003, the competition was generally known as the Albanian National Championship. In 2003, the name was formally changed to Kategoria Superiore. From 2021 onwards, for sponsorship reasons, the league has been called Abissnet Superiore.

Dominance & club success

Despite 45 clubs having taken part over time, only ten clubs have ever won the top division. The most successful club in the league’s history is Tirana, with 26 titles. Other clubs with multiple titles include Dinamo Tirana, Partizani, Vllaznia, Skënderbeu, Elbasani, Teuta, Egnatia, Flamurtari, and Kukësi.

Modern format & recent evolution

The league’s format has changed over time. Since the 2014-15 season, it has been a stable 10 clubs, with each team playing 36 matches (each opponent four times). In the modern era, there has been a greater focus on club licensing, infrastructure, and aligning with UEFA standards.

Competition format & rules

League composition & match schedule

Since the 2014-15 season, there are 10 clubs in Kategoria Superiore. Each club plays 36 matches per season, which means they play every other team four times: twice at home and twice away. The season runs for roughly ten months, from August to May.

Relegation, promotion & play-offs

– The two teams with the fewest points at the end of the season are relegated to Kategoria e Parë.
– The top two teams from Kategoria e Parë are promoted to Kategoria Superiore.
– The team that finishes in 8th place in Superiore (the third from bottom) goes into a play-off against the winner of the Kategoria e Parë play-off for a place in the top division.

Championship play-off (“final four”)

After the regular season, the top four teams go into a knockout play-off to decide the league champion. In the semi-finals, if a match is tied after 90 minutes, the team that finished higher in the regular season table is the winner. There may also be a third-place match in some seasons.

Tie-breaking rules & seeding

Seeding in the play-offs is based on a team’s position in the regular season league table. When teams are on the same number of points in the league table, the following rules are used to decide their ranking:

– Head-to-head record.
– Goal difference.
– Goals scored.
– Other criteria as defined by the Albanian Football Federation (FSHF).

Licensing, infrastructure, & participation criteria

Clubs must meet licensing requirements set by the Albanian Football Federation (FSHF). This includes having a good stadium, being financially healthy, and having youth teams. There may also be rules that limit the number of foreign players per team.

European qualification & continental competition

UEFA slot allocation

The champion of the Kategoria Superiore earns a place in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The second and third-placed teams, along with the winner of the Albanian Cup, get a spot in the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds. The number of European spots may change depending on Albania’s UEFA coefficient and country ranking.

Qualification criteria & mechanism

– Final league rankings determine which clubs enter European competitions.
– In case of a points tie, tie-breaking rules, such as head-to-head records and goal difference, are used to decide the final position.
– Domestic cup results may also influence which team gets a spot in Europe if the cup winner has already qualified through their league position.

Historical European performance

Albanian clubs have occasionally reached the later stages of European tournaments, though deep runs are rare due to limited resources. KF Skënderbeu became the first Albanian club to reach the group stage of a European competition (the Europa League) in the 2017–18 season. Generally, clubs from the Kategoria Superiore begin their European campaigns in the early qualifying rounds and must progress through multiple rounds to reach the group stages.

Rules, licensing & participation criteria

Clubs must meet licensing requirements set by the Albanian Football Association (FSHF), and where it’s relevant, UEFA, to play in Kategoria Superiore. If a club fails to meet these criteria, it may be denied a place or relegated, regardless of its sporting performance.

Licensing & eligibility

Licensing covers various criteria:

Financial: No serious debts to players, other clubs, or the federation.
– Infrastructure: The stadium must meet standards for safety, lighting, seating, and facilities.
Personnel & administrative: Clubs must have qualified staff, such as a general manager, finance officer, media officer, medical doctor, and physiotherapist.
Legal: Clubs must be a legal entity and comply with all legal obligations.
Sporting: Clubs must have a youth development programme.

Stadium & infrastructure standards

Clubs must have a suitable home stadium that meets minimum standards for pitch quality, capacity, changing rooms, and media facilities. Sometimes, clubs have to use a different stadium if their home ground does not meet the standards. The stadium may also need to comply with specific requirements for floodlights and spectator amenities.

Player registration & foreign quota rules

– Clubs must register their squads in line with FSHF rules, including deadlines and squad size limits.
– The league can impose limits on how many foreign players a team can have on the pitch at once, and starting from the 2025-26 season, clubs will have the right to field an unlimited number of foreign players.
– Players from certain partner nations may be exempt from foreign player restrictions.

Youth & reserve team obligations

Clubs are often expected to have youth development programmes, and some licensing criteria may require a certain number of homegrown players in the squad.

Disciplinary & competition rules

Clubs and their staff must follow disciplinary regulations. The FSHF can impose sanctions for things like fan misconduct, protesting against match officials, or failing to appear for a match. Sanctions can include fines, points deductions, and suspensions. For example, a player can be suspended for a number of matches for unsporting behaviour, and a club can be fined if its fans throw objects onto the pitch.
