It was founded in 1924 and is the top tier of the Swedish football league system, operating on a system of promotion and relegation with Superettan. Seasons run from late March or early April to the beginning of November, with the 16 clubs all meeting each other twice, resulting in a 30-match season, for a total of 240 matches league-wide. Including the 2021 season, Allsvenskan has been running for an unbroken streak of 96 seasons. Unlike other European football leagues, the Allsvenskan did not experience an interruption in play during World War II due to Swedish neutrality.

A total of 66 clubs have played in Allsvenskan. ‘The Big Three’ in Swedish football and Allsvenskan is used to refer to AIK, IFK Göteborg, and Malmö FF. They are generally considered to be the three largest clubs in Sweden from the three largest cities .
AIK Fotboll was founded in 1891. The club holds the record for having played the most seasons in the Allsvenskan. AIK has 12 championship titles and is third in the all-time Allsvenskan table.
BK Häcken was founded in 1940 and has played sixteen seasons in Allsvenskan. They debuted in the league in 1983. The club was started by a group of 14- to 15-year-old youngsters, and they had a wish to not just play football for fun but to create an organisation and play in the national league system.
Degerfors IF was founded in 1907. They have never won the Allsvenskan but finished as runners-up on two occasions. In 1940-41 and the 1963 season. They play their matches in the Stora Valla.
Djurgårdens IF Fotboll was founded in 1891 on the island Djurgården. The club has won the league twelve times and the cup five times. The league titles have mainly been won during three separate eras.
Hammarby IF was founded in 1915. Hammarby is placed eleventh in the all-time Allsvenskan table and has won the league once in 2001. The club is owned 23.5% by famous Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović.
IF Elsborg was founded in 1904. The club’s homeground Borås Arena is also called Elfsborg Fortress, since Elfsborg is Allsvenskan home strongest team in the 2000s. The Borās Arena seats 16.200 spectators.
IFK Göteborg was founded in 1904. It is the only club in the Nordic countries that have won one of the main UEFA competitions, having won the UEFA Cup in both 1982 and 1987. They have won 18 Allsvenskan titles. The club is considered the most popular football club in Sweden.
IFK Norrköping was founded in 1897. The club has won thirteen national championships and six national cup titles. IFK Norrköping were most successful during the 1940s when they won five Swedish championships and two Svenska Cupen titles under the Hungarian coach Lajos Czeizler and with players like Gunnar Nordahl and Nils Liedholm.
IK Sirius was founded in 1907. They have played for some time in the second division. However, on the 24th of October 2016, Sirius gained promotion to the Allsvenskan for the first time in 42 years.
Kalmar FF was founded in 1910 as IF Göta. KFF has played 33 seasons in the Allsvenskan since its debut in 1949. They have won one championship title in 2008.
Malmö FF was founded in 1910. The club has won a record 22 Swedish championships and the most national cup titles with 14. The club is also the leader of the overall Allsvenskan table. It is the most successful club in Sweden.
Mjällby AIF was founded in 1939. The club’s first season in the highest division was in 1980 and they are currently playing for 8 consecutive seasons.
Varbers BoIS was founded in 1925. Over the years several sports have been covered by the club, but activities are now centred on football and wrestling. The new organisations Varbergs BoIS FC (football) and Varbergs BoIS BK (wrestling) work side by side under the “umbrella” of Varbergs BoIS.
GIF Sundsvall was founded in 1903 and were promoted just last season. They have played a total of 19 seasons at the highest level of Swedish football.
IFK Värnamo was founded in 1912 and were also promoted last season. The most famous player from the club is Jonas Thern, who was captain of Sweden when they finished third in the 1994 World Cup.
