Liga 1

Liga 1, formerly known as the Divizia A, is Romania’s top professional football division. It was founded in 1909 and is now organised and run by the Romanian Football Federation. Currently, 16 teams in Liga 1 play each other in a double round-robin system. The team at the top of the table at the end of the season is crowned the champion. The bottom two teams in the standings are relegated to Liga 2, while the teams finishing in third and fourth place qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

All-time top scorer

The all-time top scorer in the Romanian top flight is Dudu Georgescu, who scored a total of 252 goals in the league. Georgescu is widely considered one of the greatest Romanian footballers of all time and is remembered as one of the greatest goalscorers in the history of Romanian football.
Dudu Georgescu was a Romanian footballer who played as a striker. He began his professional career with Steaua București in the 1960s and played for several other Romanian clubs, including Dinamo București and Rapid București. In addition to his success in Liga 1, Georgescu also played for the Romanian national team, scoring a total of 21 goals in 50 appearances.
Throughout his career, Georgescu was known for his scoring ability and his clinical finishing. He won the Liga 1 top scorer award seven times and remains the all-time top scorer in the Romanian top flight to this day. Georgescu passed away in 2017, but his legacy as one of the greatest goalscorers in Romanian football lives on.

Record champion

The record champion in Romanian football is FCSB, formally known as Steaua București, who have won a total of 26 championships in Liga 1, the top professional football league in Romania. FCSB was founded in 1947 and has been a dominant force in Romanian football ever since.
FCSB has a long and storied history, having won its first championship in the 1950s. They have since won an additional 25 championships, with their most recent title coming in the 2014-2015 season.

Teams

FC Rapid 1923 is a Romanian football club based in Bucharest. The club was founded in 1923 and plays in Liga I, the first tier of the Romanian football league system. The team is one of the most successful teams in Romania, having won the Romanian Cup 13 times, the Romanian League title three times, and reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991. Rapid is one of the three teams to have never been relegated from the Romanian top division, the other two being Steaua București and Dinamo București.

Universitatea Craiova 1948 Club Sportiv is a professional football club based in Craiova, Romania. Founded in 1948, it is one of the most successful clubs in Romania, having won Liga I on four occasions and the Cupa României five times. The club have competed in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup and has also had a strong presence in domestic European competition. The team has been nicknamed “The Wolves” due to the presence of a wolf on the team’s crest.

FC U Craiova 1948 SA is a Romanian football club based in Craiova, Romania. The club was founded in 1991 and currently plays in Liga 1, the top tier of Romanian football. The club is best known for its successes in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when they won the Romanian Cup three times and the Romanian League twice. The club is also known as Universitatea Craiova and is nicknamed “The White and Blues”.

Acs Campionii Fotbal Club Argeş is a professional football club based in Piteşti, Romania. The club was founded in 2011 and has had a successful start to its professional career, finishing in the top 4 of Liga III in its first two seasons. They have also had success in the Cupa României, reaching the quarter-finals in the 2013–14 season and the semi-finals in the 2014–15 season. The club’s home ground is the Stadionul Câmpionii, which holds a seating capacity of 7,000.

CF Chindia Târgovişte is a Romanian professional football club based in Târgoviște, Dâmbovița County. The club was founded in 1925 and currently plays in Liga I, the top-tier Romanian football. The club’s home ground is the Eugen Popescu, which has a capacity of 6500. Chindia Târgoviște has won two Romanian Cups and two Romanian Super Cups.

FC Botoșani is a Romanian professional football club based in Botoșani, Romania. The club was founded in 2001 and currently competes in Liga I, the top flight-of Romanian football. FC Botoșani won the Romanian Cup once in 2018 and also reached the final of the Romanian Cup in 2017. The club’s most successful period was between 2017 and 2019 when they twice qualified for the UEFA Europa League.

 

Sepsi Osk SF NTU Gheorghe is a Romanian professional football club based in Sfântu Gheorghe, Covasna County, Romania. Founded in 2008, the team play in Liga I, the top tier of the Romanian football league system. The club has enjoyed success over the years, winning Liga II in 2011 and Liga III in 2009 and 2012. They have also enjoyed success in the Romanian Cup, reaching the final in 2012.

ACS Petrolul 52 Ploiești is a Romanian professional football club based in Ploiești, Prahova County, Romania. The club was founded in 1924, and they have a long history of success, winning Liga I in 2004, Liga II in 1997 and Liga III in 2017. They were also the runner-up in the Romanian Cup in 2004 and the Liga I in 2005. The team plays its home games at the Petrolul Stadium, which has a capacity of roughly 16,500 people.

FC Voluntari is a professional Romanian football club based in Voluntari, Ilfov County. Founded in 2011, the team currently plays in Liga I, the top tier of the Romanian football league system. The club has reached the Romanian Cup final two times, in 2015 and 2016, but lost both finals. Voluntari has also competed in the UEFA Europa League twice, in 2016–17 and 2017–18.

AFC Hermannstadt Sibiu is a Romanian professional football club based in Sibiu, Romania. Founded in 2010, the club plays in Liga I, the top division of Romanian football. The club’s home ground is the Stadionul Municipal in Sibiu, which can hold a capacity of 13,500 spectators. The team’s traditional colours are red and white.
