Ligue 2 Data

The Ligue 2 was founded in 1933. Together with the Ligue 1, it is organized by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). From 1933 to 2002, the league was known as Division 2. The 20 Ligue 2 clubs meet twice each season in a home and away game. This means that 38 matches are played per season per club.

At the end of the season, it will become clear which team will lift the trophy, which teams have earned a promotion to the Ligue 1 and which teams will relegate to Championnat National. The three highest-ranked teams will promote to the Ligue 1, and the three lowest-ranked teams will degrade to the Championnat National. Amiens
Amiens Sporting Club, also known as ‘Les Licornes’ (the unicorns), is a French football club based in the northern city of Amiens in the Hauts-de-France region. The club was formed in 1901 and plays in Ligue 2. The club plays its home matches at the Stade de la Licorne located within the city and has a capacity of 12,097.

Annency

Football Club d’Annecy is a French football club headquartered in the Haute-Savoie town of Annecy. Back-to-back promotions in 2015 and 2016, as well as a third promotion in six seasons in 2020, saw the club return to the third division Championnat National. Annecy was promoted to Ligue 2 in 2022.

Bastia
Sporting Club Bastiais is a Corsican association football club based in Bastia on the island of Corsica. Their nickname is ‘Les Bleus’ (The Blues). Bastia plays in Ligue 2. The club was founded in 1905 and plays its home matches at the Stade Armand Cesari located within Bastia. The stadium has a capacity of 16,048.

Caen 
Stade Malherbe Caen is a French football club based in Caen in Normandy that competes in the Ligue 2. Their nickname is Malherbe Les Vikings (The Vikings). The club was founded in 1903. Caen has been playing since 1993 at the Stade Michel d’Ornano, which has a capacity of 20,300.

Dijon
Dijon Football Côte d’Or, commonly referred to as Dijon FCO or simply as Dijon, is a French football club based in Dijon. Their nickname is ‘Les rouges’ (the reds). The club was founded in 1998 as a result of a merger between two local clubs in the city. Dijon plays its home matches at the Stade Gaston Gérard, which has a capacity of 15,995.

Grenoble
Grenoble Foot 38, commonly referred to as simply Grenoble or GF38 is a French association football club based in Grenoble. Their nickname is ‘GF38’. The club’s original incarnation was founded in 1911 and, in 1997, was formed into the club that exists today as a result of a merger. Grenoble plays their home matches at the Stade des Alpes, a sports complex based in the city’s heart, which has a capacity of 20,068.

Guingamp
En Avant Guingamp, commonly referred to as EA Guingamp, EAG, or simply Guingamp, is a professional French football club based in the commune of Guingamp in France’s Brittany region. Their nickname is ‘Les Costarmoricains’ (The Costamoricans). The club was founded in 1912 and play in Ligue 2. The club has appeared in the Ligue 1 for 13 seasons and is known for its relative success given Guingamp’s small population of only 7.000 people. Guingamp is one of only two clubs that have won the Coupe de France while not being in the first division. Guingamp plays their home matches at the Stade de Roudourou, which has a capacity of 19,033.

Laval

Stade Lavallois Mayenne Football Club, often known as Stade Laval or just Laval, is a French association football club headquartered in Laval, western France. The club was founded on July 17, 1902, and it plays its home games at the city’s Stade Francis Le Basser.

Le Havre
Le Havre Athletic Club is a French association football club based in Le Havre, Normandy. Their nickname is ‘Le club doyen’ (The Dean Club). The club was founded in 1884. Le Havre is one of the oldest French football clubs, but the oldest is Standard Athletic Club of Paris. Le Havre plays in Ligue 2 and plays its home matches at the Stade Océane, which has a capacity of 25,181.

 

Metz

Football Club de Metz, also known as FC Metz or just Metz, was formed in 1932. Metz plays its home games at Stade Saint-Symphorien, which is located in the city. Frédéric Antonetti is the team’s current manager. Metz have spent 61 seasons in Ligue 1 and 17 seasons in Ligue 2 throughout their 88-year history. Despite never winning the Premier League, they have twice won the Coupe de France and twice won the Coupe de la Ligue.

Nîmes
Nîmes Olympique is a French association football club based in Nîmes. The club was founded in 1937 and currently plays in Ligue 2. Their nickname is ‘Les Crocodiles’ (The Crocodiles). Nîmes plays its home matches at the Stade des Costières located within the city, which has a capacity of 18,482.

Niort 
Chamois Niortais Football Club, often referred to as Les Chamois, Chamois Niortais or simply Niort, is a French association football club based in the commune of Niort, in the Deux-Sèvres department of western France. The club was founded in 1925. Their nickname is ‘Les Chamois’ (The Chamois). The club’s home stadium is the Stade René Gaillard in Niort, which has a capacity of 10,898.

Paris FC
Paris Football Club commonly referred to as Paris FC, or simply PFC is a French professional football club based in Paris that competes in the Ligue 2. Their nickname is’ The Blues’ and ‘The Parisians’, and the club was founded in 1969. Paris FC plays their home matches at the Stade Sébastien Charléty, located in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, which has a capacity of 20,000.

Pau
Pau Football Club, commonly referred to as Pau, is a French professional association football club based in Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, capital of Béarn. Their nickname is ‘Les Maynats’. The club was founded in 1959. Pau plays their home matches at the Nouste Camp, which has a capacity of 4,031.

Rodez AF
Rodez Aveyron Football is a French association football club based in Rodez. The club was founded in 1929 and currently plays in Ligue 2. Saint-Étienne

The Association Sportive de Saint-Étienne Loire, or simply Saint-Étienne, was formed in 1919 and will participate in Ligue 2, France’s second tier, in the 2022–23 season. Saint-home Étienne’s games are held at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Saint-Étienne has won 10 Ligue 1 championships, six Coupe de France titles, one Coupe de la Ligue title, and five Trophée des Champions. Saint-Étienne has also won the Ligue 2 title three times.

Sochaux
Football Club Sochaux-Montbéliard or simply Souchaux is a French association football club based in Montbéliard. The club was founded in 1928 and currently plays in Ligue 2. Their nickname is ‘Les Lionceaux’ (The Lions Cubs), and Sochaux plays its home matches at the Stade Auguste Bonal, located within the city. The stadium has a capacity of 20,025. Sochaux is known for its youth academy, which has regularly finished in France’s top ten rankings of youth academies.

Toulouse
Toulouse Football Club is a French professional football club based in Toulouse. The club was founded in 1970 and currently plays in Ligue 2. Their nickname is ‘Les Violets’. Toulouse plays its home matches at the Stadium de Toulouse located within the city, which has a capacity of 33,151.
