The 48th edition of the CONMEBOL Copa América, dubbed ‘Rocking the Continent’, is billed to begin this month.

Sixteen teams will go head-to-head for America’s bragging rights in the less-than-a-month-long continental contest, which will be held in 14 venues across the USA from June 20 to July 14.

While any country from the sixteen competing nations has the chance of picking up the trophy, a few notable ones will shoulder the weight of high expectations.

Ranked in no particular order, join us as we take a look at the favourites to win Copa América 2024.

Favourites: Argentina (Group A)

If ranked on a scale of 1 to 10, FIFA World Cup title-holders (2022) and Copa America defending champions Argentina will arguably sit at the top of the list.

A team ranked no. 1 on the FIFA Rankings and headlined by Lionel Messi shouldn’t have any problems emerging at the top of Group A, which also features Peru, Chile, and Canada.

Aged 36, the iconic no. 10 may be in the twilight of his career, but with multiple options in every corner of the pitch, Argentina’s star-studded squad are tipped to reach the finals once again.

Well-covered in goal, Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez will be between the sticks.

Well-known for stopping penalties, the Aston Villa goalkeeper, who played 34 games, kept eight clean sheets in the just-concluded season.

He also pulled off an impressive 95 saves for Villa, 66.2% of shots that would have ended up in the back of the net.

Argentina, who are on a 12-game winning run [12W, 0D, 0L], have the likes of Lyon’s Nicolás Tagliafico and Manchester United’s Lisandro Martínez in defence.

Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool) and Exequiel Palacios, who helped Bayer Leverkusen on a season-long unbeaten run to a maiden Bundesliga title, also form the core of the midfield.

While City’s Julián Álvarez will present a goal threat, Lautaro Martínez, who was Serie A’s top scorer last season after 24 goals, will equally be a source of worry for defenders.

The 19-year-old Alejandro Garnacho also showed promising signs with Manchester United in the just-concluded season.

Surely, Lionel Messi deserves to be mentioned twice. ‘There’s not a lot of time left in my career,’ the Inter Miami star recently acknowledged.

However, leading his side to successive Copa America titles could be the extra motivation needed for a return to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Messi has scored a goal in each of the 12 games he has played while creating 10 assists in the current calendar year for Inter Miami.

With a 6.43 SCA/90 in the ongoing MLS season, Argentina’s leading scorer (108 goals), Messi, will be looking to wave his magic wand once again as he hopes to lead his side to a record 16th Copa America title.

Favourites: Mexico (Group B)

While Argentina are tournament favourites, Mexico will be keen to earn its maiden Copa America title. The two-time runners-up (1993 & 2001) will be making their 11th appearance at the tournament.

Currently ranked in 15th place by FIFA, Mexico came agonisingly close to a maiden CONCACAF Nations League title in March, where they lost 2-0 to the United States in the final.

They will be hoping to heal their wounds by emerging at the top of Group B, which features Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica.

Despite back-to-back defeats in the run-up to Copa America (WLWLL), El Tricolor are tipped to reach the finals.

Copa-America-2024-Group-B

Led by Jaime Lozano, he has among his ranks the highly sought-after Edson Álvarez (West Ham), whose defensive qualities in the midfield will come in handy.

The 26-year-old, who has scored five goals for Mexico in 78 appearances, produced 59 blocks in 31 games played in the just-concluded Premier League season.

He will add his aggressive work rate and stamina to Mexico’s defensive department.

Meanwhile, don’t forget to keep an eye out for Feyenoord’s Santiago Giménez.

The 23-year-old, who has four goals in 27 appearances for Mexico, finished as the second-top scorer in the Dutch league after 23 goals.

Tipped as a candidate for Copa América’s Golden Boot award, his 3.99 shots per 90 and 1.86 SOT/90 will surely leave even the best defences jittery.

Favourites: Uruguay (Group C)

Among the very few countries capable of rubbing shoulders with tournament favourites Argentina is Uruguay.

Ranked 15th on FIFA’s scale of best teams, La Celeste are joint title holders with Argentina, having also won the Copa America title 15 times, the last being in 2011.

Copa-America-2024-Group-B

Led by Marcelo Bielsa, who comes along with a 40-year-long coaching career, Uruguay will be looking to be the ones walking away with a record 16th title.

In Group C, alongside Panama, the United States, and Bolivia, the two-time World Cup champions (1930 & 1950) are tipped to finish at the top of the heap.

Uruguay (WDLDW) have lost only once in the last five games leading up to the competition.

While 37-year-old Luis Suárez is in the twilight of his career, Uruguay has plenty of options in attack.

Darwin Núñez, who scored 11 goals and created eight more for Liverpool in the just-concluded season, is in the fold alongside Federico Valverde.

Usually overlooked, and despite having made a 10% goal contribution for Madrid in the past season, Valverde’s versatility will leave him as a threat whether deployed in the midfield or as a winger.

Favourites: Brazil (Group D)

Surely, you would agree with us that any list without Brazil should be thrown in the bin.

Despite failing to reach lofty heights in the recent past, the five-time FIFA World Cup champions are always favourites in any major football tournament.

Led by the 62-year-old Dorival Júnior, who slipped into the managerial role in January, Brazil will be aiming for a 10th Copa America title, having last won in 2019.

While his CV may lack big European club names, don’t be fooled by his credentials. Júnior was handpicked for his wealth of local experience in the national league.

His 22-year-long managerial career, from his debut at Ferroviária in 2002 until his departure from São Paulo in January 2024, was in Brazil.

While Júnior remains unbeaten in four games with the Brazilian team, the Little Canary have only lost once in the previous five games(LWDWD) leading up to Copa America.

Alisson, who kept eight clean sheets in 28 appearances for Liverpool in the just-concluded season, will likely be Brazil’s first choice in goal.

Éder Militão, who helped Madrid finish as the best defensive side in La Liga, will join Gabriel in defence.

Gabriel was a key figure for Arsenal last season, helping his side come within whiskers of the Premier League title as the best defensive side.

After 28 successful tackles in 48 attempts and 44 key blocks for the Gunners, Gabriel will be keen to bring his aggressive, no-nonsense defensive qualities to the Brazilian side.

Copa-America-Group-D

Key figures in Madrid’s 15th UCL title-winning campaign, a speedy Rodrygo and a tricky Vinícius Júnior, will surely cause panic among even the best defensive sides in the tournament.

Vinícius Jr. was Madrid’s second-highest goal scorer last season with 15 goals. While Lucas Paquetá’s creativity will be seen in midfield, keep an eye out for teenage superstar Endrick.

The 17-year-old will celebrate his next birthday one week after the tournament’s final and will be in Madrid’s colours next season.

Endrick has scored three goals, all from the bench, in six appearances with the Brazilian national team.

Lethal in front of goal, the left-footed forward will be eager to prove his worth as Brazil’s next-best emerging talent during the three-week-long tournament.

Barring any surprises, a first-place finish in Group D, which also features Paraguay, Colombia, and Costa Rica, should be a walk in the park for Seleção.

Who would you stake your bet on?

While the likes of Argentina and Brazil may be clear favourites, be prepared to see nerve-racking disappointments akin to what you’d find at the ongoing Euro 2024.
