ICC World Test Championship history

The ICC World Test Championship was initially planned in 2013 to replace the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. However, it was cancelled due to financial problems within the International Cricket Council’s board and the lack of sponsorship. The new scheduled date was set for 2017. In January 2014, the 2017 ICC World Test Championship was cancelled, and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy was reinstated.

Finally, in October 2017, the ICC announced that the Test league had been agreed upon by its members. The new league would involve the top nine teams playing against each other over the course of two years with a chance to qualify for the World Test League Championship Final. The first edition of the ICC World Test Championship started with the 2019 Ashes Series. New Zealand was able to lift the trophy after defeating India in the final in June 2021.

ICC World Test Championship 2021-2023

The second edition of the ICC World Test Championship started on the 4th of August 2021 with the Pataudi Series. The series is scheduled to finish on the 31st of March, 2023. The tournament will be played over the course of two years, including 69 matches over 27 series. The top two teams will advance to the final. Each team will play six series: three at home and three away. New Zealand is the reigning champion.

    England is one of the founding nations of the ICC. They’re a member of the ICC, with the Test, ODI and T20I status. They were the first team to play a Test match alongside Australia.
  • India men’s national cricket team
    India men’s national cricket team, Men in Blue, is governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The British introduced the sport Cricket to India in the 18th century. The India men’s national cricket team played their first Test match on the 25th of June in 1932.
  • New Zealand men’s national cricket team
    New Zealand men’s national cricket team, known as the Black Caps, played their first Test match in 1930 against England. They became the fifth country to play Test cricket. The New Zealand national cricket team became known as the Black Caps in January 1988 after their sponsor held a competition to choose a name.
  • Pakistan men’s national cricket team
    Pakistan men’s national cricket team is a full member of the ICC and participates in the Test, ODI and T20I cricket matches. The Pakistan national cricket team, known as the Falcons, played their first Test match against India in 1952.
  • South Africa men’s national cricket team
    The South Africa national cricket team, also known as the Proteas, are a full member of the ICC and participates in the Test, ODI and T20I cricket matches.
  • Sri Lanka men’s national cricket team
    The Sri Lanka National Men’s cricket team are nicknamed the Lions. They played their first Test match in 1982 against England at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium.
  • West Indies men’s national cricket team
    The West Indies men’s national cricket team, nicknamed the Windies, has been a full member of the International Cricket Council since 1926. The team represent the countries and territories in the Caribbean region.
