The CONMEBOL Copa America has taken place since 1916 and is the oldest still-running continental football competition, as well as the third most watched football competition in the world. The competition contains 16 national teams and determines the champions of South America.
The tournament was previously known as Campeonato Sudamericano de Futbol (South American Championship of Football). South American Championship of Nations was the official English language name. The current name has been used since 1975.
Since 1993, the tournament has typically consisted of 12 teams, comprising all 10 CONMEBOL teams along with two additional teams from other confederations. Mexico has been a consistent participant in every tournament from 1993 to 2016, typically accompanied by one additional team from CONCACAF, except for 1999, when AFC team Japan joined the 12-team lineup, and 2019, which featured Japan and Qatar. The 2016 edition of the event, Copa América Centenario, expanded to include 16 teams, with six teams from CONCACAF alongside the 10 from CONMEBOL. Notably, Mexico’s two runner-up finishes mark the highest achievements for a non-CONMEBOL side in the tournament’s history.
